Nature Reserves

There are two Ponds in the peninsula of Capo Falcone: Casaraccio Pond at the end of the Saline Beach about 3 Km. before reaching
The pond of Pilo with a colony of pink flamingos
Stintino coming from Porto Torres and Pilo Pond near the village of Issi on the northern coast. The pond of Pilo lies out of sight beeing located some kilometers internally between the main road and the sea. In top of that is nature reserve, so that has kept a quite sinister look on the shore with a carpet of shells' fragments and here and there a carcass of a fish or other animals, but in the middle you can admire thr wonderful show given by a colony of pink flamingos that nested here (present also in other ponds of Sardinia as for example the Cabras Pond).
The two ponds of the promontory

The characteristic of both of the ponds is to be made by salt water; in several points salt deposits form when the level of water decreases in the arider periods. In both the ponds actually the side close to the sea is subject to continuous infiltrations of salt water. Owing to this situation, it is obvious that vegetation can be only made up of species endowed with a high resistance to the salinity of the soil; they are growth of bushes and rushes and in some more internal places, also tamarisks.

The Pond of Casaraccio (or Saline pond), not much deep, extends for about 7.5 Ha. It is separated from the sea by a narrow strip of sand and has a length of about 800 mt. (perpendicularly to the line of the coast) against a width of only 100 mt.

The Pond of Pilo has a larger extent of about 1.2 Km2. It is separated from the sea by a narrow strip of sand as well. Unlike the pond of Casaraccio, the Pilo one is feeded by small streams that soften the water in irregular way in several points. The shore is extremely soft, covered by a carpet of salt and of shells fragments; for this reason the shore is not suitable for walking all over.
