The typical flora
of the Sardinia is constituted by plants, mainly evergreen with
the characteristic of being particularly resistant to the drought.
For the greatest part it is scrub vegetation. Among the trees we
have to mention the sughera,
cultivated in the inner areas and that represents an important

resource for the local economy and the holm
oak, present also on Asinara
at Elighe Mannu in the northern part of the island; this tree has
lengthened leaves dark green on the back and silver (with a slight
velvet) in the inner part; the holm oak in addition to being particularly
resistant to the typical summery drought of these places,
has the characteristic to be able to regenerate the own roots in
case the trunk has been cut, destroyed from fire or attacked by
parasites; it can assume shape of a high tree until approximately
15 mt., when let to grow without compulsion or of scrub in the frequent
cases of cuts or destructions of the trunk. Other plants that can
grow like trees or like scrub depending on the type of cut are the
oleander,
that smarten up gardens and tree-lined avenues of many tourist places
and the pitosforo;
in the area of Stintino the seafront
from Stintino village to the Pelosa beach
has been planted recently with oleanders. The vegetation that constitutes
the characteristic Mediterranean scrub covering huge areas of Capo
Falcone and Asinara, counts a high
number of plants among which the tamarisk,
the myrtle,
used for cooking and as a base for a typical Sardinian liqueur,
the lentisk,
the juniper,
the rosemary,
the sage
and the broom,
etc. As well as in other warm and dry areas of the Mediterranean
sea, in Sardinia too we find plants of prickly pears

everywhere.
Moreover exclusive characteristic of Asinara is the thorny
cornflower. On
the saltish coasts of the ponds there are quite spread the typical
growth of rushes and also canes; giunchi and canes are raw material
for many of the typical handicraft weaved baskets of Sardinia.
But there are also some species of vegetation not present on the
island or present only where imported, like beeches and conifers.
