S. Gavino Basilica at Porto Torres |
Lombard or Tuscan influence
as is for example the Basilica
of San Gavino at Porto
Torres. Wanted by Gonario-Comita "giudice"
of Torres and Arborea it was built between 1065 and 1111. It rises
in the area of the Roman necropolis (where are buried the martyrs
Gavino, Proto and Genuario), on a pre-existing Byzantine basilica,
of wich pratically there are no traces left. It is characterized
by a large nave and two semicircular opposite apses. It was restored
twice; in one of these occasions in 1614 were dug up the bodies
of the three martyrs. A high column with the statue of San Gavino
is situated close to the Basilica. |
