There are many animal species on the island, some of which not

found elsewhere. But on the contrary many other species of animals quite common on the Italian territory are absent in Sardinia; for example animals as bears, beavers, vipers, squirrels, wolves and badgers among others are not present on the island. Many of the animals populating Sardinia have the peculiarity of a smaller size in comparison with the correspondent species of the continent. One of the most characteristic animals of the Sardinia is the mouflon, a wild ovine with large curved hornes. Also the the wild boar is quite common in the wide areas covered by the typical Mediterranean scrub and particularly in the nature reserves;

also this specie is considerably smaller than the common wild boar of the maremma, as you can see in the picture. Among the symbol animals of Sardinia there is the donkey and particularly we have to point out the albino donkey of Asinara, that you can find only on that island. Walking on Capo Falcone you can run into the marginata tortoise, one small tortoise whose max. length is about 40 cm.) or into a hare, quite common

here also near to the built-up areas. It will be on the contrary much more difficult to see a wild cat, present in the nature reserves of Capo Falcone, but in few exemplars, or a fox present here as well as in other parks and mounts of Sardinia. Besides we have to point out also the weasel and the dormouse among the species of this area.

In the few Sardinian woods with high trees it is possible to find few martens, that unfortunately find not suitable most of the Sardinian habitat made mainly of scrub vegetation.
